What is a Spiritual Medium?

A Spiritual Medium is a person who makes themselves available to the Spirit world so that members of the Spirit world can communicate with people who are still alive. A medium is just an ordinary person who has the ability to use more than his / her five senses. He /she does not have the ability to "call up" or "disturb" the dead, because it is not the medium who chooses who he / she would like to communicate with. This is the choice of those in the Spirit world. However, through personal development, the medium learns to differentiate between Spirits that are not so desirable (those who give false information or cause trouble) and those that come in love and sincerity.

What is the purpose of Mediumship?

Although most people would say that a medium should only use their gifts to prove that life does exist after death, I believe that if spirit have made the effort to communicate with their friends and loved ones, they do so for a purpose and any information that they wish to give to help us, either in our spiritual life or material life, should be listened to with love and gratitude, rather than dismissed as fortune telling. My father (who is still alive) came to visit me yesterday. When I answered the front door to him I didn't acknowledge him and then turn him away once I saw that he was ok. I realised he had come to visit me for a reason and invited him in to talk to me. Surely we should offer this same courtesy to our friends and loved ones in the Spirit world who make the effort to visit us? If we are afraid, or uncertain who is there, then we can choose not to open the door, but to shut it in their face is another thing.

How do Mediums Work?

Each medium is a unique individual and as such, work in their own way. Just as we use a combination of our physical senses in the material world ( touch, hearing, sight etc ) to communicate with others, Spirit use a combination of the "extra sensory perceptions" of clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairsentience to communicate with mediums. I can only speak from my own personal experiences as to the way in which Spirit work with me. As I mentioned earlier, each individual works in a different way and different people may experience Spirit communication in different ways. I

What is Clairvoyance?

Clair-voyance means clear-seeing. This may be experienced both subjectively or objectively. The easiest way to explain the way that I experience clairvoyance subjectively is for you to try this:
Think back to a favorite holiday / scene that you have experienced in the past. Travel back and "re-live" the images in your mind. This is the same way that Spirit show me their "images". Some are their own personal memories, others are images which convey information which help to provide guidance for the future.

When I experience clairvoyance objectively, I see spirit in the same way that I would see you if you were standing in front of me. This is a rare occurence though, as most of the clairvoyance I receive is subjective.

What is Clairaudience?

Clair-audience is clear-hearing. Once again, this may occur on a subjective level or on an objective level. We all "talk" to ourselves as we go about our daily lives. Thoughts of
"Where did I put that?" or "If I don't hurry up, I shall be late." With subjective clairaudience, the experience is similar, except that the "thoughts" which come into our mind come from the Spirit world.

Objective Clairaudience is where Spirit can be heard as if they are standing next to you in a physical sense, and talking into your ear. This too, is a rare occurence for me, as most of the clairaudience I receive is on a subjective level.

What is Clairsentience?

Clair-sentience is clear-sensing. This is the main way in which I work, both on a subjective and objective level. To try and understand the way that "sensing" works on a subjective level, try this:

Have you entered a room where there has been an argument and "felt" the atmosphere? " You could cut it with a knife" some people say. This is a good example of using our "senses" to sense energy subjectively. When I "sense" spirit energy subjectively, I "feel" their emotions, both those being experienced at the time of their communicating with me and also those emotions that they relay to me to describe their experiences of the past.

Objectively, I sense Spirit as a feeling of warmth or heat, coldness or a slight breeze, tingling, palpitations or other similar sensations. It is a common occurrence for me to feel the physical pain that the person in Spirit had felt prior to passing and you may also feel this as your loved ones draw close to you in the Spiritual sense.

Developing your own Mediumship

We all have the ability to communicate with Spirit, as we are, indeed, Spirit ourselves in a material body. The objective in "developing" our own mediumship is to help us to learn to differentiate between the images, thoughts and feelings that come from within ourselves ( subconscious thoughts, memories, life experiences and our own emotions and physical pain.) from those of spirit who are trying to communicate with us.

As you seek to develop your own awareness of Spirit and Spirit communication you will become increasingly aware of the many blessings and difficulties that are involved. That is why I always advocate that a deep desire to be of service to others and that dedication and committment are necessary pre-requisites for the true Spiritual seeker, because without such determination, the road can often become a difficult one to follow.

Therefore, I believe that the best place to start on your own path to Spiritual development is to firstly understand your motivations for undertaking this journey. Like attracts like and if your motives are anything other than pure, honest and for the good of others, you may well find yourself attracting Spirit who also lack integrity.

Before you can truly know and understand others ( be it those here on earth, or those in Spirit ) you firstly have to learn to know yourself. Otherwise, how can you hope to differentiate between the two? Learn to communicate with your own
Spirit through meditation and introspection and it will help you to know yourself. When you are comfortable with your own beliefs, feelings, thoughts and emotions, you will find it easier to become aware of and empathetic towards those of others, both here and in Spirit.
